This Stinging Nettle Eating Competition Is Painful and Stupid

Have you ever accidentally walked through stinging nettle? Hurts like a monkey, doesn’t it?


Well, some people don’t heed nature’s warning about the plant and instead decide to turn it into food. While doing so removes its stinging properties, there are also some who, just because they have a screw loose, opt to eat the hurtful plant as-is.


The World Nettle Eating Championships, which takes place in Marshwood, England, has people eating as many feet of stinging nettle as possible in 60 minutes. While they’re allowed to drink during the event, they cannot get sick nor leave the table.


This year’s winners were Michael Hobbs and Lucy Dermody, who ate 74 and 68 feet of nettle respectively — then, I imagine, had a long and painful visit to the toilet.
