Free my mans!

It’s hard to imagine a funnier exhibit than the raccoon exhibition at Wild Encounters Mini Zoo in Limerick, Ireland. And before you ask, no, this isn’t a joke; there really is a raccoon in a zoo next to meerkats, owls and emus.

Raccoons are native to North America, and so, we take them for granted. They live in our backyards, they rummage through our trash and we generally consider them to be the equivalent of pigeons and rats. However, the first wild raccoon sighting in Ireland didn’t occur until 2011, according to Ireland’s National Biodiversity Data Centre.

So, can we really blame the Irish for putting one on display? After all, one man’s trash panda is another man’s exotic animal.
