If you thought Japanese was hard, they think our language is pretty crazy, too.

When learning a language — especially one where the pronunciation is different from your own — it can be pretty easy to lose motivation. You practice some words, go up to a native speaker and say them, they hit you with a look of “what the fuck was that?” — and soon, you’re back on Duolingo and cursing the owl for putting you in that awkward situation in the first place.

What might make you feel better about this experience is that it’s one shared by pretty much everyone who has tried to learn another language. Pronunciation of a language can sound ridiculous to someone who doesn’t have a lot of familiarity with it — for example, these Japanese people, who seem absolutely flummoxed after being asked to pronounce some normal English words.
