Some influencers seem content with consistently getting attention for all the wrong reasons. Alix Earle is one such influencer. In a recent video in which she is cleaning out her closet, Earle holds up her “puke-covered bday dress” from her birthday last year that she’s kept in her closet this entire time.

She explains that she “meant to get it dry cleaned but I didn’t, so it’s just been sitting in my closet.” A woman off camera, who clearly speaks for the people, exclaims, “Up against your other clothes?!” To which Earle responds, “And it really smells,” before waving it in the woman’s direction, offering her a sniff.

Commenters were divided. Some fans found it shocking but ultimately just another example of Alix being Alix, while critics found it a disgusting and bizarre attempt to perform relatability and quirkiness for her audience. More than one commenter pointed out that Earle has moved since her last birthday, meaning she would have had to decide to pack up the puke-stained dress and bring it with her during said move.

The negative comments do appear to outweigh the positive ones, with comments like, “I don’t quite understand her dirty girl aesthetic,” “You couldn’t have waterboarded this out of me” and “This y’all queen?” receiving thousands of likes. Several commenters tried to argue that Earle has a serious problem with alcohol — many of her videos are about drinking and partying, which is normal for someone in their early 20s, but one commenter argued, “If she can’t get her life together enough to clean the puke out of her clothes that’s there from vomiting from drinking, it’s an issue.”

If the volume of negative comments and stitches are to be believed, audiences may finally be tiring of the quirky yet relatable influencer shtick peddled by so many online as a blatant attempt to, in Tiktoker clios_world’s words, “conceal an otherwise inaccessible lifestyle,” and “establish a connection with an audience that is gazing up at them from many tax brackets down.”
