RIP Greg, we barely knew ya.

The recent cold snap that’s hit much of the U.S. has had some unexpected consequences. For example, this TikToker recently awoke to discover that her fish tank, which contained a single fish named “Greg,” had frozen solid.

In case you weren’t aware, while some fish can come back to life after being frozen, most pet stores — or, I don’t know, normal people — would recommend that you try your darndest not to freeze your pet.

That’s why there are many mechanisms that are supposed to be in place to prevent this type of thing from happening, such as having a water heater for your fish tank or not keeping your home below freezing. The TikToker apparently didn’t do those things, and so, her fish became a fishcicle.

Or did it? In a follow-up, the TikToker says that the fish came back to life. Yay!

Just kidding — it promptly died following its thawing.

Not to worry, though. The TikToker says she’s taken the criticisms to heart and bought a bigger tank along with a heater. She’s also purchased a new fish — everybody, say hello to Fred.

Yes, this appears to be a five-gallon tank, and yes, that’s the absolute minimum for that kind of fish, and yes, there’s not a plant in sight in the tank — but damn it, it’s a step in the right direction. Let’s just hope Fred doesn’t meet the same fate as Greg; the world already has more than enough frozen fish.
