This Indian man says he’s not a creep, he’s just a thief.

According to the Deccan Herald, a woman in Bangalore, India was riding the train when she suddenly felt someone grab her bottom. Thinking quickly, she screamed — in the process alerting nearby security personnel to the man’s presence. He then tried to escape by running up an escalator, but he was soon caught by police.

Initially, the woman was reluctant to press charges against the man, saying that the police should just let him off with a warning. However, charges were eventually filed, leading to the man pulling out the excuse to end all excuses: He was not groping the woman, merely robbing her.

“The man claimed that he did not intend to touch the woman, but accidentally did so while attempting to pickpocket,” reads the Deccan Herald piece.

Unbelievably, the man might actually be telling the truth. The man, who is a caterer by trade, had previously been booked for “stealing a mobile phone of a woman in the BMTC bus in April this year.” Then, when the police looked through his house, they discovered 20 additional cell phones. Either this guy’s a thief, or he just really likes Pokemon Go.

There’s no word on what’s happened to the man in the days since, but if you’re planning to travel on an Indian train anytime soon, watch your phone — and protect your butt.
