A monkey decided to put a new, terrifying spin on the old adage of monkeying around, wreaking havoc throughout the streets of Indianapolis after breaking loose from their home in the midwestern city.

After escaping through their owner’s fence on Wednesday evening, Momo, a patas monkey, embraced its species’ status as the fastest monkey on earth, managing to evade authorities — and terrify residents — for hours on end.

“That monkey is gonna come kill us, mama!” a child can be heard yelling in the background of a now-viral video depicting Momo wandering through what appears to be someone’s backyard.

While Momo did not commit homicide during their day out, they may have left a few likely-shocked passersby with some gnarly wounds. "Animal Control Officers have received reports that the monkey has bitten people, but nothing has been confirmed yet," a spokesperson for animal care services said of the incident.

Yet unfortunately for Momo, their time traipsing through Indiana’s capital came to a screeching halt on Thursday morning after they were apprehended by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.

“Momo the monkey has been captured safely,” the department wrote on Twitter alongside a snap of one of their officers posing with Momo and their owner. “That was more than enough monkey business for us. Thank you all for your assistance.”

Though Momo may have been reunited with their owner, we can’t really blame them for taking some “me” time — sometimes you just gotta go a little bananas.
