You know the white powder you put on your laundry or kill ants with? Some people on TikTok have started adding sprinkles of borax to their water. And it is driving chemists and medical professionals on the app insane.

The TikTok “health gurus” are claiming borax helps with joint pain and overall health.

@ChemThug makes content about chemistry and debunking holistic health “hacks”. The borax content has tipped him over.

@chem.thug @Chem Thug Pt. 2 - Please dont ingest borax out the detergent box. Whatever dubious purported health benefits there *might* be to consuming borax are quickly negated by consuming something that was not made for human consumption in a facility that likely was not required to report any potential contaminants. If you want more boron in your diet, there are tons of foods that you can eat that are good for you—please don’t recklessly poison yourself! . . . . . . . . #borax #boraxwater #scienceexplained #sciencefacts #chemistryteacher #chemistry #chemtok #themoreyouknow #boron #chem101 #scienceathome #fyp #foryou #chemistryishard #sciencetok ♬ original sound - Chem Thug

“Don’t eat s**t out of the laundry box people,” he exclaims at the beginning of his video.

He breaks down that there is not enough literature to support that borax can relieve joint pain. Any positive findings are mostly connected to actual plants that are rich in boron.

“According to the literature it can cause liver failure, it can cause reproductive harm, it also can cause developmental issues,” he states.

Most importantly the borax bought from the laundry aisle clearly states that humans should not consume it.

We’ve been repeating this notion on the internet for a very long time but don’t consume things not made for people to consume.

@chem.thug They usually don’t care too much listen tho. “How have we circled back around to the "ingesting laundry stuff" era,” comments one user under @chemthug’s video. Tide pods were a joke but some conservatives were drinking bleach during the pandemic.

“It's like going "I need more iron in my diet, and then eating rusty metal’,” commented another user.

What’s next? Is some holistic health Tiktoker gonna convince everyone to start drinking Windex to get rid of toxins?

Make a feast out of the cleaning aisle. They’re called urinal cakes for a reason.
