Handicapped assholes.

There is something that has been bothering me in the last few weeks.

I have noticed way too many people using their physical disabilities as a reason to break the law.  For years Ive seen small stuff, like parking in fire lanes,  or double parking.  Recently however its gotten worse.  From parking illegally, to stealing from stores.

Just the other day I confronted a guy in a grocery store parking lot for double parking.  All of a sudden he started flipping out about how he was handicapped and had survived cancer.  He proceeded to tell me he will park any way he wanted and that a simpleton like me could do nothing about it.

What he didnt know is my friend that was with me happened to be an off duty local police officer.  We also happened to be in his municipality.  Trying to contain my laughter at the moment my friend wrote out a ticket and handed it over was the hardest thing I have ever done.  After the whole incident my friend proceeded to tell me that he writes more tickets for handicapped drivers than any other group.

What makes people think that just because they have an insignia on their license plates that they can act like assholes?   It bothers me to no extent.  My own mother and step father are both handicapped.  My mom is in a wheel chair, and my step father has a heart that skips a beat.  Yet the two of them follow simple parking laws.  Hell they even try to leave the handicapped spots open for others that they feel need them more.  So for me to see someone abusing a privilege given to them is angering.

Besides parking there is the horrible driving that I see.  I understand a person may be physically disabled, or mentally.  However that is no excuse to drive in the fast lane and go 20 mph under the speed limit.  It doesnt excuse one from not using turn signals, and above all it doesnt give you the right to act like a fucking asshole.

But what really prompted me to write this happened yesterday.  While working my part time job as a loss prevention agent I discovered a woman in a wheel chair hiding merchandise.  I followed her around the store and couldnt believe how many things she was grabbing and hiding.  I had to wait till she left the register and made it to the doors before I could stop her.  When I announced who I was and asked her to come with me she played dumb.  When I told her I watched her hide merchandise she proceeded to tell me she was allowed to steal it because she was handicapped and the world owed her.

This isnt an isolated incident either.  I know other people who work in the same company that have had run ins like this.  Its so prevalent that during our training were informed to watch the elderly and the handicapped closely.

So I pose this question to you guys, what the hell makes these people think that just because theyre handicapped they can break the law?
