Same Sh*t, Different Ass

Remember when you watched an 80s or 90s movie, no matter how cheesy or devoid of actual plot it was, for the first time and thought to yourself "wow, this is awesome"? So many of these titles became legendary and keep appearing on TV even now. The reason is they are unique, they've made a breakthrough, they started a trend. Can you name several recent movies you can say the same about?

I'm writing this because I watched the new horror movie Rings recently and I have to say, it's one of the worst sequels I've seen. It's supposed to be the next part to the American adaptation of the Ringu series, so like the third part properly. The movie is so hectic  and cliche, it's really sad to watch. But what's even worse than the movie is the fact that someone made another one of these movies like the one before, so it's probably going to be a hit. What's the point, though?

The first Ringu was pretty revolutionary, since it wasn't the gore or jump scares that made it creepy and scary, it was the ghost of a long haired girl that made it different from other horror movies. From there, they made like 2 or three more parts in Japan, a remake in Korea, and a remake with two sequels in America. There were also other movies with the typical scary ghost girl figure in the early 2000s. There was so many of them, people pretty much stopped making them since apparently they've realised that it's the same stuff, but under a different name.

Year 2017, so how about we make some new movies, eh? Oh, but how about something scary? Like horror movies? Sure! How about something new, some stuff that didn't follow your typical horror movie pattern, like with Sinister or It Follows? Naw, let's just remake Blair Witch Project and The Ring!

I'm pretty sure that there's many weird and creepy new concepts for something that's original and wouldn't be boring, yet they seem to end up in a trash can while the producers decide to pump in millions into the making of some cheesy remake that doesn't even entertain you in the least.

Blair Witch 2016 - a bunch of teenagers running around the woods, that end up trapped in a timeless dimension forest hut, wow, how original.

Rings - your typical Samara, the girl that exits the TV to get you 7 days after you watched her video, mixed with a small town molester keeping his victims locked kind of flick that makes you bored and not in the least scared.

It's not just the horror movies, either. Superhero movies and their constant sequels, or some quality comedy? When did you watch something like The Pet Detective hit the cinemas? Instead they keep the Loaded Weapon cliche strong with all those Scary Movies in the 2000s that pretty much became a separate genre for all those movie spoofs. Where's a quality Adam Sandler movie like Happy Gilmore?

On the other hand, you have tons of shows that are both original and fun to watch - the revolutionary Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, Grimm, or Lethal Weapon (yeah, they remade the movie into a series with Damon Wayans as Murtaugh). Can't they do the same with movies?
