I picked the rose on a Friday.  I was late getting it to water.  It began to droop.  When I did manage to find a vase and fill it with water, I added a couple pinches of sugar.  Within an hour the rose was beautifully opened and stood up straight.  It remained perfect for five days.  After that, it began to droop.  I added fresh water and a little more sugar.  It perked up a little, but not like before.  A few days passed and petals began to fall.  No matter how much fresh water or sugar I would put into the vase, the rose would not come back to it's prior beauty.  The petals all fell off and the rose was dead.  How sad I thought.  Maybe I'll try again.
