To Do That Which Is Right. No. 2

If you were asked, " what price would you pay to save the life of just one born baby child"? How would you answer that? Would you sell your house? Disgrace yourself in  front of your peers? Risk destroying your entire career? Spend countless hours and over a decade to save a helpless child?

Like most, and probably I, would pretend that the question was never asked. But now what if the question involved literally thousands of children, their lives are literally in your hands and you are the only one to stop it. If you take on this fight your entire life is at risk, your reputation subjected to constant peer and legal attacks. This will go on for years to save children from incredible pain and eventual death.

This challenge was taken on by a lovely women I met a year ago. At the time I did not know what she had done and what she had been through. Her demeanor was gentle and friendly, she was also beautiful. I was introduced to her through a doctor I was working for. Our conversation was simple and matter of fact. Never did I realize that this was a person that would do that which is right at any cost to herself.

Recently, the doctor I worked for, Michele Brill Edwards, required my services. When I was done, I entered her home and saw a hand written scroll on the wall, with the heading FDA Audit. Being interested in modern medicine I inquired about it. What I learned confirmed my suspicions on big pharma and government.

I'll let you Americans know at this point, from what I learned your FDA is probably one of the best health protection agencies in the world. Canada and the UK being second. Still it is vulnerable to corruption as this story will indicate. I can't get into all the details but this brave doctors name is Nancy Olivieri. The drug in question was Deferiprone. It caused toxic liver damage.

Dr. Olivieri has fought for the last ten years to stop this medicine being administered to children. After jumping incredible hurdles in Canada to stop this medication, she then went to the USA who were about to approve it, and won her case. This was a huge fight on her behalf with incredible pressure from big pharma, litigation and political interference. This was at her own time and cost.

Big pharma then moved to Europe to try and sell their swill. Dr. Olivieri continued her fight there. She spent over 100,000 dollars of her own money fighting it. In the end the European Union found against her charges saying since she was neither an agent of the pharmaceutical industry or official government department her testimony had no weight. Case dismissed!

There are literally thousands of drugs introduced to the market place every year, only one or two people like Dr. Olivieri fighting for your well being.

Thank you, Dr. Olivieri!

A true Hero!

However, Nature Medicine reports that: "the Hospital for Sick Children ... has refused to allow the grievance panel to access relevant documents." Happily, "Olivieri was selected ... as a recipient of the 2001 award by the Civil Justice Foundation in Washington," which noted:

"The legal assaults which you have endured in your battle against the drug company, and in your battle against the medical establishment appear to have been fought with the type of uncommon bravery that is rarely seen. It is for this reason that our trustees have unanimously chosen to recognize you for this most prestigious award."
