What's the Use?

You can lead a horse to water, but you cant make him drink, you can lead a man to knowledge, but you cant make him think. ~ Earl Thomas

For the hundred thousand hours of study, research, and investigation and the attempts to disseminate information for the benefit of others, I find that the attempt is largely wasted.  Most of the people with whom I come in contact seem to be pea brained, knuckle dragging Neanderthals with hearts of stone.  You could tell them that drinking water is good for you and they'd call you a Commie Socialist and keep right on dying of thirst.

I went to help an old lover and her ex sell her furniture from her storage shed. I ended up helping him move it, then we went out to eat, she drank a margarita, and started a scene in the restaurant with her ex. I tried to diffuse it and tell her it was just the tequila talking, but it didn't do much good.  I asked her how her AA was going and her ex sarcastically said it was all his fault because he wouldn't go to the AA meetings with her, trying to absolve himself of any responsibility.  Why wouldn't he go to the AA meetings with her when she got herself into a shitload of trouble, a DWI, and is on four years of probation?  It seems like a caring individual would at least give some support to the person he or she supposedly loved.  Hell, I even offered to go to the meetings with her if she wanted to go.  When I mentioned this to her in a message, I immediately became the bad guy, so she continues on her path to destruction.

She's lost about everything she ever owned and is now renting a room from someone and sleeping on a day bed.  It was sad to see.  About the only things she salvaged were a book case, a small stereo, and a TV.  She's working two jobs trying to manage the high rent on the small room and keep herself eating... and drinking I guess.  It's sad because when I met her, she had a high paying job with benefits and had an opportunity to make something of herself.  She's really fond of those bad boys, though, and lo and behold, what happens?  She gets treated badly.  Who woulda thunk?  Now she's on yet another trek toward self-destruction and abuse.

You would think that once a person has been beaten and abused so much, they'd finally wake up and say, "Hey, something's wrong here."  But NOOOOOOoooooo!  People like that always think the next bad boy (or bad girl) is going to be different and everything is going to be rosy.  They wouldn't know what was good for them if it stared them in the eyes and called them Shirley.  (I really don't know what that's supposed to mean, but it sounded good, so I wrote it.  Shirley?)

Well, it just goes to show you that real life makes about as much sense as eBaum's World does.  You can give people facts, try to help them, try to show them a better way, and all they're going to do is castigate you for it.

I'm really not sure why I continue on.  Perhaps there's a strong streak of masochism in my genes.  Perhaps I just can't get over the fact that someday, somewhere, someone will listen and their lives will be better for it.  Silly me, huh?
