The Roaring Twenties
THE ROARING TWENTIES
The twenties were a time of liquor and jazz
Prohibition was punishment, with no booze to be had
But the need was still there, over-riding the law
Even though it was scarce, it continued to be bought
In the back of a building, if you knew what to say
They would open the door, and show you the way
Enter the time of the secret speak-easy
These secluded social outings, were usually so sleazy
There was booze, and broads, and debauchery galore
The twenties had plenty of that figurative roar
The mob moved in, and picked up the slack
Bootleggers began to go on the attack
The black markets not known for their reasonable side
Everyone wanted it all, and they started to fight
It was war in the streets, with gangsters in arms
They inflicted both death, and bodily harm
Al Capone was the face in the papers
A kingpin in crime, involved in all capers
The police made efforts to clean up the mess
Heroes had names like Elliot Ness
But these times just couldnt last
When living through history, present becomes past
The government learned drinking will never die
So they now tax the crap out of the booze that we buy
