The current hot topic is the Word Cup in Brasil, but the reporters don't seem to focus mainly on the matches or teams as much as they are trying to bring up corruption, riots and criticise FIFA's decision about hosting this year's championships in Brasil.
What's the deal?
Basically the decision was made by FIFA's high council, or whatever they wanna call themselves, and it was based on... Brasil's legendary performances in the previous World Cups. So what should we do? Maybe give Brasil the right to host the next Cup. Sounds reasonable, but they don't have the right stadiums, their roads are terrible and they'd need to spend a lot of money to reach our expectations. You know, they are almost a 3rd world country. But this is a chance for them to invest in the infrastructure and people would have so much job opportunities! And it's gonna cost them billions but they'll have better roads and can earn even more from the economical boost, business opportunities and decreased unemployment.
Sounds reasonable, right? But in reality the people in charge of organising that stuff (THE BRASILIANS, NOT FIFA) had different plans. A lot of people profited, but not the common people. Companies who were supposed to prepare the stadiums, hotels and roads - they did. The most common complaint is that the costs were two or three times bigger than expected, which is because... the construction companies needed (or wanted) more money. So who's to blame? FIFA, of course!
The people on the news constantly whine about how FIFA was so unreasonable, and that people are rioting because they want education and social funds, not a stupid world cup that they've spent billions on. But how is FIFA to blame here? They gave Brasil the offer which they accepted. Their own country men have stolen money from the wold cup budget. Why are they mad at FIFA? Oh yeah, cause it's easier to put the blame on the foreigner who actually wanted to help a shitty country.
What was FIFA's goal? Allowing Brasil to join the richer countries club because the Brasilian football players have earned a place in the World Cup history. What did the Brasilians do? Not only did they abuse FIFA's trust, they shamelessly blamed their benefactors for their own fallacies.
