When NASA first sent an astronaute into space, thay found out that ball point pens did not work in 0 gravity.
So, to correct the problem, they spent a decade and 12 billion $ to create such a pen. They came up with a pen that could write in space, under water and to temperatures topping 300 degrees.
The Russians used a pencil.
