This is one of the most heart-wrenching stories, with a beautiful ending, of a woman who found love after suffering from horrific abuse. -
2.
In 2012, Florida native Melissa Dohme became the victim of a brutal domestic attack from her terrifying Ex-boyfriend. -
3.
Robert Lee Burton Jr., stabbed Dohme 32 times, leaving her in critical condition. -
4.
When paramedics came to Dohme’s rescue, one of the first responders was an EMT named Cameron Hill who recounted the brutal first encounter to Tampa Bay Time, “You couldn’t tell she was blond” because she was so drenched in blood. Miraculously, Dohme’s life was saved, though she was far from out of the woods. -
5.
She had intense physical and speech therapy on the road to recovery. These photos were taken 2 years apart. -
6.
Dohme since the attack has also become an active member of a local nonprofit group that aims to raise awareness about domestic violence. -
7.
She can’t hide her scars, so she has learned to accept them and embrace them which only lends strength to her cause. -
8.
Oh yeah, and remember that first responder, Cameron? Well the two began dating and have since started an intimate relationship together. -
9.
“When I look back on that night, I can’t think of it as all bad anymore because I met Cameron,” Dohme told the Tampa Bay Times. -
10.
Three years have passed since the horrific incident and Dohme had the distinct honor of throwing out the first pitch at a Tampa Bay Rays game this week. Little did she know there was a big surprise just around the corner. -
11.
What she didn’t know was that this invitation to pitch was all set up by Cameron with the purpose of proposing in front of the entire stadium. -
12.
He even thought ahead by writing “Will you marry me?” on the ball. I’ll save you the suspense, she of course said “YES!!” -
13.
“He’s the one I’ve been waiting for. My fairy tale.”
