The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)...One of the most outrageous films of 2013, The Wolf Of Wall Street recounts the rise and fall of Jordan Belfort from his rise to the top of the world to his inevitable crash, landing him in prison. Leonardo DiCaprio puts on an excellent performance in this extravagant film that truly captures the essence of what money and greed can do to a person. If you haven’t seen this film yet, pop some corn and strap in for one hell of a ride. -
2.
Catch Me If You Can (2002)...It seems as if Leonardo DiCaprio was born to play the young, wealthy douchebag that gains his wealth in dishonest ways. Catch Me If You Can relives the story of Frank Abagnale Jr. who while in high school conned millions of dollars worth of checks by impersonating an airline pilot, a doctor, and an assistant attorney general. This fast paced film with an all-star cast is definitely worthy of some praise. -
3.
127 Hours (2010)...If you thought that it was impossible to shoot an entire movie in one location, think again. Directed by Danny Boyle, this incredible story of Aaron Ralston (James Franco) engulfs the audience in a whirlwind of emotion as Ralston desperately finds a way to escape after his arm is crushed under a boulder, leaving him trapped and helpless. Franco does an excellent job of depicting what being helpless for five days feels like and he nails the climax of the film, doing the true story some serious justice. -
4.
The End of the Tour (2015)...While not as notorious as the other films here, "The End Of The Tour" elegantly portrays the relationship between a writer and a journalist. The story follows David Lipsky, a Rolling Stone reporter, on his five day interview with acclaimed author, David Foster Wallace. The entire film centers around their conversations during the tour to promote Wallace’s new novel and with little to no actual action, the film has the unique ability to keep you on your toes throughout. -
5.
Captain Phillips (2013)...The performance from Tom Hanks in Captain Phillips is enough to warrant this film some attention, but the story is the true winner here. Although the film faced scrutiny due to the accuracy of the characters, the film displays an emotional roller coaster as the U.S. container ship, Maersk Alabama, is captured by Somali pirates. Centered around the relationship between Captain Phillips and the Somali Pirate leader, Muse, this thriller keeps your emotions on edge, making this movie a must see. -
6.
Argo (2012)...If winning the Oscar for Best Picture wasn’t enough of a motivator for you to see this film, then you should think again. Ben Affleck both directs and stars in this true story about the covert rescue mission of six Americans during the Iran hostage crisis. CIA specialist Tony Mendez (Ben Affleck) develops an elaborate plan for the group to escape Iran in a way that is borderline insane. Keep a stress ball handy for this intense whirlwind of emotion. -
7.
Million Dollar Baby (2004)...Clint Eastwood does a fantastic job of bringing the true story of Frankie Dunn, a down on his luck veteran boxing trainer, to life. Just when it seems like he has lost all hope, Maggie Fitzgerald (Hilary Swank) enters his life as she is looking for a trainer. The film displays the emotional journey between the two, bringing in several other important characters along the way, making this one of the greatest films of 2004. -
8.
Moneyball (2011)...Here’s a movie about sports that will make you think more than you ever expected. The Oakland A’s General manager, Billy Beane (Brad Pitt), is faced with assembling his team with a small budget, forcing him to think out of the box. When he meets Yale grad, Peter Brand (Jonah Hill), the two use the power of numbers to create a low-budget team that others would consider flawed. The reason for choosing these players is simple; they get on base. -
9.
Saving Private Ryan (1998)...If you haven’t seen Saving Private Ryan, do yourself a serious favor and watch this incredible film loosely based on a true story. Directed by Steven Spielberg, this movie accurately recreates the intensity of war. After finding that three of the four Ryan brothers have been killed within the week, Captain John Miller (Tom Hanks) and his troops go forth on intense mission to bring home the last remaining Ryan brother. This emotional journey is portrayed extremely well throughout this true story, making this one of the best films of all time. -
10.
Rock The Kasbah (2015)...While this film is not yet released, it’s definitely high on our radar. Bill Murray stars in this true story about Richie Lanz, a has-been rock manager from California who, after being dumped and stranded by his last remaining client in a war-torn Kabul, finds the golden voice that he’s been looking for. The only issue is that this golden-voice is that of a woman, Salima Khan, in a country ridden with cultural prejudices.
