Afghanistan Is Banning Wi-Fi Because It ‘Causes Immorality’

Ever since the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan, things in the country have been pretty weird. While they’ve tried to give the new government international recognition, and even attempted to promote the country as a tourist destination, people are a little hesitant to promote a place where things like music are banned.
But if you thought the government of the country was running out of things to crack down on, think again.
That’s because the country’s northern Balkh province recently announced that they would be banning fiber-optic internet. While slow and expensive mobile data remains functional, government offices, public institutions and homes in the area are now left without the faster wired internet.
Why? According to Haji Attaullah Zaid, a provincial government spokesman, the ban was put in place to “prevent immorality.”
Immorality? On the internet? No way!
In response, some citizens have said that they plan to move out of the region, while others are trying to figure out how they can continue to live their lives without this modern essential.
Wi-Fi remains available in the rest of the country, though it’s an open question whether that will last.
