After Millennia of Avoiding Them, Mosquitos Have Finally Hit Iceland

Finally, you too shall know our pain!

Iceland is a strange place filled with strange people. Is it beautiful? Of course — but it’s also dark half the year and filled with folks who think “urine-covered shark” is a perfectly acceptable snack.

In short, it’s not the first place that comes to mind when you think of “paradise.” However, up until recently, they had one thing over the rest of us: no mosquitos. That is, until earlier this month, when a man discovered two female mosquitoes and one male while attempting to observe moths.

To make matters worse, it doesn’t seem like these are going away anytime soon. The mosquitos that were found are one of the few breeds that can survive the winter — meaning that Iceland is likely losing its title as one of two mosquito-free zones.

The other one is Antarctica, so if you’re trying to move to a place without mosquitos, you’re going to have to make some sacrifices.
