AI Data Centers Are Now Using Jet Engines to Power Their Servers

Hear that sound? It’s not a jet taking off — it’s me generating pictures of Sexy Pikachu.

AI data centers have a problem: Not only are they mostly useless, but they consume a lot of power. We’re not talking “running a few washing machines at the same time” levels of power — we’re talking so much power that keeping them running could break the power grid.

Seeing this, AI companies aren’t coming to the logical conclusion (that they should stop, of course). Instead, they’re finding new ways to power their data centers. For example, Grok from xAI is allegedly powered by quasi-legal methane gas generators.

But even that isn’t enough. Instead, AI data centers are looking at using commercial aircraft jet engines bolted onto trailers. These offer 48 MW of power at the cost of being loud, expensive, and terrible for the environment.

Really makes you feel like a loser for sorting your recycling, huh?
