Recently, a wave of so-called “AI-powered” toys hit the market. These toys advertise that they can talk to your kids for hours. That’s right — no more sticking them in front of the iPad. Instead, you can stick them in front of a teddy bear powered by ChatGPT! Isn’t that great?
As literally anyone could have predicted, this has gone terribly. Despite the best efforts of creators, no AI-powered toy seems to have set up all the necessary guardrails in place to make them actually safe for kids to use.
Case in point: the FoloToy. This bear was advertised as a toy that could engage your child in conversation. In fairness, it did do that — however, it tended to talk about things like knives and go into graphic detail about adult topics, such as proper knot-tying for relationships and even teacher-student role play. Complainants allege that, often, it would simply bring up these topics unprompted.
Now, the bear has been pulled off the market, and the CEO of FoloToy says they’re pulling all their AI products off the market until they can figure out how to use them safely. Here’s some advice: Keep them off the market!
