An Influencer Illegally Flew to Antarctica. Now, He’s Stuck

Teenage American influencer Ethan Guo said he was going to fly to all seven continents. Now, he can’t leave one of them.

According to CBS News, Guo set off on his journey last year with the hope of raising $1 million for cancer research through St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. To date, the trip has been a success, with Guo flying his Cessna 182Q to North America, South America, Asia, Africa, Australia and Europe.

However, when it came time to fly to Antarctica, Guo decided that he was just going to wing it (pun unavoidable). Rather than getting permission to fly to the continent, he got submitted a false flight plan claiming he would go to the Chilean city of Punta Arenas. Instead, he landed on King George Island, where he was immediately detained.

Guo was charged with handing false information to ground control and landing without authorization. As punishment, he has 30 days to donate $30,000 to a children’s cancer foundation to avoid going to trial. He must also leave Chile as soon as circumstances permit and is barred from returning to the country for three years.

The problem is that circumstances currently don’t permit him to leave. Bad weather means he’s trapped on the island, and while he still has his plane, reports indicate that it wouldn’t be able to handle a flight out. At the same time, Guo is required to pay out-of-pocket for all “aircraft security and personal maintenance” during his stay — which, on an island in the middle of nowhere off the coast of Antarctica, I’m sure isn’t cheap.
