Astronomers Want to Blow Up An Asteroid Before It Hits the Moon

It’s not the plot of a science-fiction movie — it’s actually happening.

Space researchers love to scare people with news about asteroids. “There’s an asteroid coming really close to Earth!” they’ll exclaim, only for you to find out later that it was several million miles away (“That’s close in space terms!” Shut up — only tell us about these things if they’re going to kill us!).

That said, there’s always a chance that their fears are correct. That’s why some are saying that we should act on a recent fear in the astronomy world — by blowing up an asteroid.

The asteroid, called “2024 YR4,” is about 300 feet in length and currently has about a 4 percent chance of hitting the moon. If it actually *does* hit the moon, it could generate lunar debris that would mess up our satellites. This is why scientists, including some at NASA, are saying we should just blow the thing to smithereens.

The current proposal involves using two 100-kiloton nuclear devices on the asteroid, which are about five to eight times more powerful than the nukes the U.S. dropped on Japan.

Honestly, I couldn’t care less what you blow up in space. Send it!
