Discord May Have Accidentally Leaked 1.5 Terabytes of Age Verification Photos
But I thought all that information was deleted?

If you’ve used any social media app in the past year, you’ve probably noticed that more of them are getting serious about age verification. Gone are the days of just saying you were born on January 1st, 1900 and being let through the door. Now, they need a scan of your ID and a picture of your face!
Thankfully, the services that do these face and ID scans say that their servers are well-protected and that any verification photos are deleted soon after completion. Unfortunately, these companies are also liars, because it looks like hackers may have gotten hold of thousands of verification photos.
As reported by the BBC, the company providing age verification services for Discord recently admitted to a security breach that may have leaked at least 70,000 identification photos. Other reports say that the actual number of images is over 2 million, equating to a terabyte and a half of data.
That’s odd, considering that The Guardian previously reported that the company claimed these photos were “deleted directly after.” I guess they’re lucky that “directly after” is ambiguous. Maybe they meant in terms of geological time — if you think about it, a few years is just a blip when you look at the history of the universe!
So far, Discord simply confirmed the breach but said that some details being reported are false. They claim that it’s “part of an attempt to extort payment.”
Still, I think it’s fair to say that we need answers here. Do you still have my verification images? And if so, can I have them? I remember looking particularly nice that day and want to add those pictures to my scrapbook.
