What are you supposed to do when you’re broke and unemployed, but you still want to eat? For most of us, the answer is the classic “beans and rice” — but for one man in Japan, the answer was “game your local delivery app to score as much free cuisine as possible.”

According to the South China Morning Post, the scheme involved using a variety of cheap mobile phone cards assigned to fake names. After acquiring one of these new cards, he would sign up for a new account. Then, he would place a “no contact” delivery and, after the food had been delivered, claim he never received it. He would get a refund, then close the account.

This strategy allowed him to avoid detection for two years — and let him run up a total of over $24,000 USD in fraudulent food charges.

“At first, I just tried this trick. I couldn’t stop after reaping the rewards of my fraud,” Higashimoto told the police.

The man has now been caught and arrested. Hey, at least the food in jail is free!
