If you miss the good old days, don’t worry — they’re coming back in the form of asbestos.

In 2022, the Food and Drug Administration responded to growing concerns about contamination in cosmetics by introducing a strict testing regime. This would require the government to develop standardized testing methods for detecting and identifying asbestos in talc-based cosmetics.

Aaaaaaand now that’s all gone.

Yesterday, the FDA under Trump suddenly reversed course. Instead of a robust testing regime, we’re just going to stick to the old system that filled our vanities with asbestos.

But how bad is the asbestos problem, really? Well, according to the Environmental Working Group, the old testing regime (you know, the one we’re going back to) let a lot of asbestos-based products onto store shelves. In fact, in 2020, 1 in 7 talc-based cosmetics were found to contain asbestos — and remember, there’s no safe amount of asbestos!

In response, experts are advising to not use these cosmetics around your mouth and nose. Land of the free, baby!
