If you’ve heard about microplastics, you’re probably already aware that they’re everywhere and there’s basically nothing you can do about them. Still, you might think that little changes, such as swapping your plastic containers out for glass, might reduce your exposure to the stuff.
Nope, you’re not getting out that easy!
According to a new study, which tested the microplastic content of various packaged beverages, drinks in glass bottles had more microplastics than their plastic counterparts by a factor of anywhere from 5 to 50 times.
Why? The researchers aren’t sure, but they think it could have something to do with the paint on the caps of glass beverages. Apparently, they can get dinged up in transit in ways that are invisible to the human eye, but still cause microplastics to be leached into the beverage.
What are you supposed to do about this? Well, some researchers suggest rinsing off your caps before opening your glass bottles, but I propose an alternative: At this point, just give up.
