Instead of Tattoos, Teens in China Are Getting Custom Teeth

Imagine waking up after a bad night with a molar that says “Mom.”

While youth in the U.S.A. might show off their rebellious side with a sleeve tattoo or enough lip rings that talking makes it sound like they’re jangling keys, things are a bit different in China.

In general, tattooing has a pretty significant stigma in China. In 2018, the government’s media regulator advised TV stations not to feature actors with tattoos, and in 2021, the country’s national soccer team banned its players from getting inked.

So, if you’re a Chinese youth looking to express yourself, what do you do? Why, you get your teeth tattooed, of course!

Well, not really. While the name makes the process sound intense, it’s actually pretty easy and painless. Teeth are scanned, and then thin, custom 3D-printed crowns are fitted on top of them. They can be removed at any time, and you can even swap them out for a special occasion. Happy anniversary, babe — I got your photo on my canines!

This “tooth tattoo” trend hasn’t made its way stateside yet, but I really hope it does — in this economy, I’m down to sell the advertising space on my two front teeth to the highest bidder.
