New Zealand Government Spends $10 Million to Fix ‘Memorial Bells,’ Then Fires the Only Person Who Knows How to Play Them
A bit shortsighted, don’t you think?

The country of New Zealand has a problem. They spent about $10 million of their colorful dollars — equivalent to around $5.9 million USD — in order to fix a memorial containing bells that ring for fallen soldiers. Now, they’re firing the only guy who knows how to actually ring the bells.
According to RNZ, Timothy Hurd, the man who’s been playing the bells for the past 40 years, was recently informed that he would be out of a job. This is an issue because the machine to play them is pretty complicated — meaning that, at present, he’s kinda the only person who can do it.
The government insists that the bells will continue to function; however, they claim they will only ring them for a holiday called Anzac Day. One local responded to this by asking, “So, we’re paying 10 million to fix a bell that’s never going to be rung, apart [from] maybe once a year?”
A fair question!
