North Korea Can’t Get Anyone to Come to Its New Resort Town

I wonder why.

North Korea is looking for new ways to bring in much-needed foreign currency. The latest attempt has been to increase the amount of tourists coming into the country. However, that strategy doesn’t seem to be working too well.

According to CNN, visitors to the country’s new Wonsan-Kalma resort have a complaint: The place is empty.

“There are no other foreigners apart from us, 15 people,” explained a Russian tourist.

It’s not for lack of activities; there are beaches, water parks, and more, all for your carefully-monitored enjoyment.

The main issues seem to stem from the fact that 1) strict viral protocols are still in place, meaning that who one meets and where one can actually go is severely limited; 2) foreigners are totally separated from local North Koreans and sectioned off into set zones; and finally, 3) it’s seemingly only open to Russians who, despite being limited from traveling to much of the rest of the world at the moment, would rather spend their vacation in Bali.

That said, those who *have* gone say it’s not a bad vacation, with pleasant beaches and good service. But, if you really want an interesting beach trip, I think there are a couple thousand other destinations you might want to check out first.
