Remember when allegedly serious people told you that it was totally reasonable to pay $250k for a JPEG? Yeah, that was a weird few months.

Anyway, those days are long gone. According to Business Insider, over 90% of NFTs had lost all value by 2023, and if you even mention the name in tech circles, they’ll look at you like you’re still trying to push the “metaverse” as the next big thing.

Back when NFTs were all the rage, companies moved heaven and earth to develop systems to integrate them into their platforms. Now that no one cares anymore, they’re slowly trying to unload these expensive systems, as evidenced by a recent announcement from Reddit.

In short, Reddit revealed they are retiring their “Collectible Avatars” NFTs. Users can no longer submit new avatars, the shop was shut down, and the NFT wallet feature is now disabled.

How did the community react? They didn’t — the post only has one comment (from the mods) and the subreddit has been largely dead for at least a year.

It’s nice to get a little preview of what this AI thing is going to look like in a few years.
