Study Finds Everyone is Sick of Social Media (Except Boomers)
While social media use among young people is going down, older people are using it more than ever.

It’s a fact that’s often gone underreported, but people are genuinely getting sick of social media. We’re not just saying this because people complain about it all the time — usage numbers are actually going down, on average, around the world. For example, back in 2019, the average 16 to 24 year old spent around 3 hours a day on social media. Now, that number is around 2.75 hours. Not a big decrease, but a decrease nonetheless!
There’s just one exception: old people.
It turns out, while people aged 16 to 34 are using social media less or as often as they did in 2019, old people are using social media for more time than ever. According to a study from GWI commissioned by the Financial Times, people ages 55 to 64 have increased their social media usage by around 25 percent since 2019.
The study also had other interesting findings. For example, while people overall are using social media less, people in North America are using it more. Not only that, but the “social” part has largely faded away; the amount of people saying they use social media to meet new people and connect with friends has dropped significantly, while those saying they simply use it to pass time or follow celebrities has skyrocketed.
So, if the internet has felt very lonely and Gen X/Boomer-y as of late, you know why!
