The Internet Is Debating Whether It’s Weird to Use Caps Lock Instead of Shift

Some people hit Caps Lock every time they want to use a capital letter.

Have you ever seen someone type and thought, “How on earth have you managed to use a computer like that?”

Whether it’s people who only use a few fingers to type or the classic “hunt and peck” typers, it seems that only a scant few people actually type the way that all those typing computer programs taught us. However, there’s one method of typing that has the internet caught in fierce debate: the use of the Shift key.

While most people capitalize words by holding down the Shift key, a recent viral post on X argues that it’s both common and perfectly normal to use Caps Lock every single time you want to capitalize a letter. This means capitalization is a three step process: Caps Lock on, hit the letter, Caps Lock off.

Some argued that, despite the added steps, they were able to hit high typing speeds with the Caps Lock method. “I've always used the caps lock for each capital letter and I'm an extremely fast typer. Like I was consistently in the 90s for wpm while transcribing,” one user wrote.

Others countered that this was a sign of just how bad younger generations are getting with computers, now that kids learn to type on their own instead of in class.

"This is what happens when kids don't have to take a typing class anymore, pure degeneracy,” wrote an X user. “Honestly I was looking forward to getting older because I thought everyone younger than me would be good with computers. Now I have to teach 60 and 20 year olds how to type and open emails,” offered another.

So, which kind are you? You can tell which ones are the Caps Lock users because they’ll be leaving their comments 20 minutes after everyone else!
