The Mushroom Guy Who Tried to Hijack a Plane is Only Getting 50 Days in Jail
The judge said that “Pilots are not perfect. They are human.”

In October 2023, a man named Joseph Emerson ate some funny fungus, then tried to take control of an airplane. Of course, there are a few details that complicate this story (for example, he took the mushrooms several days prior), but that’s the gist of what happened.
Now, we finally know what the punishment is for going a little loopy and trying to crash a plane. The answer to that question is “50 days.”
According to CBS News, Emerson successfully argued that he simply had a particularly bad mental health episode. He showed genuine remorse for his actions and received counseling following the incident. Consequently, he ended up with a plea deal of five years of probation and 50 days in jail, with credit for time served.
So, good for him for getting his life back in order. But a quick message to all pilots: If you have issues, seek help. I’d much rather be sympathetic to your problems on the ground than while barreling into a mountainside.
