TSA Reluctantly Admits That Your Shoes Aren’t Dangerous
Still can’t carry more than three fluid ounces, though!

At this point, most people will agree that airport security in the U.S. is a bit of a joke. Not only has the TSA failed pretty much every test that’s been laid out for it, but they insist on enforcing rules that make absolutely no sense. I have to take my laptop out of my bag, but my iPad can stay inside? My hoodie’s gotta come off, but if I wear a sweatshirt, I’m fine? Be real!
Recently, it seems like even the TSA has come to the conclusion that their rules are stupid. They’ve already started to roll back some regulations with things like TSA PreCheck, which allows travelers to pay a little extra to go to a faster line and ignore the rules that us plebs who don’t want to pay the $78 have to follow.
Now, they’ve revealed that all that business about you having to take your shoes off? Yeah, you didn’t really need to do that.
According to ABC News, a memo was sent out over the weekend instructing TSA agents at many airports that they no longer need to force flyers to take off their shoes.
This is a long-time coming. As noted by Vox, there’s no real evidence that the shoe removal rule made us any safer — which may be why so many European airports never really enforced it to begin with. The same applies to the rules regarding liquids, and the TSA has told Condé Nast Traveler that they plan to do away with those rules too in “the coming years.”
No idea when that will really be, but hey, at least that’s something!
