Just an Average Superhero

"Ready to do your good deed for the day?" My boss asked as he approached me. It was the day before Memorial day, in a small town that recieves thousands of people during the summer to use the neighboring lakes.

It had been busy that day at Pamida, the retail store that I work at, and I was not in a good mood at all. So no, I was not ready to do a good deed. Turned out the good deed was to carry a small folding chair about half a mile to the neighboring Old folks home. Needless to say, I was a little annoyed.

Turns out the man had walked the half mile, in the 90 degree weather, all by himself. He was 91 years old. I began to feel sorry for the man, and offered to give him a ride in my car.

I drove him to the living center, and carried his chair in for him. At the entrance was an old woman sitting all alone on a bench. I gave her a smile, asked if she was enjoying the weather. When I entered the building, I gave all the other elderly people smiles, nods, and the like. I felt great giving them smiles, when their family members were obviously too busy enjoying Memorial day to see them.

I left, satisfied with my good deed for the day, but my thoughts didn't stop there. I marveled at the ability of a blue polo and a nametag to become a symbol of hope for these older people.

You see, when I'm just at home, or hanging out with friends, I'm your average teen. But the second I put on those khaki pants, blue polo, and that nametag, I become more. With that attire, I can freely talk to any stranger I meet, I become a wealth of knowledge on electronics, and I become the kind gentleman the town knows me as.

I guess you really don't need a cape to be someone's hero. Just a Nametag.
