One Middletown Police officer got the scare of a lifetime last weekend, finding herself the victim of a hammer attack while responding to a noise complaint.

On Sunday, Officer Karli Travis headed to a residential area of the Connecticut city after receiving a call lamenting noise and broken glass in the neighborhood. Upon arriving, she approached Winston Tate, a 52-year-old resident who appeared to be wielding the tool.

Though Travis asked the man to set down the hammer — “Can you put that down, please,” she said — he refused, charging towards her as she attempted to phone for backup.

After receiving four blows from the metal weapon, Travis reached for her gun, shooting several shots toward the alleged attacker.

Both Travis and Tate suffered injuries from the terrifying scuffle, all of which was captured on the officer’s bodycam. Tate was ultimately arrested and charged with several crimes, including attempting to commit first-degree assault on an officer.

“He’s dangerous. There’s nobody that’s safe from this man,” Connecitut’s state’s attorney said of the incident.

So take it from Tate — maybe don’t bring a hammer to a gunfight.
