Despite being 80 years old, Martin Scorsese is one of the most relatable people in Hollywood. Earlier this month, his daughter Francesca shared an incredibly entertaining video of her dad guessing what certain slang terms meant, and he did a pretty good job. He correctly guessed what “tea,” “ick,” “ate,” “cap,” “slap,” “slay” and “shade” meant, which puts him ahead of a good chunk of Boomer parents, including my own.

Now he’s come out against that scourge of modern communication: email. In an interview with the Associated Press promoting his latest film, Killers of the Flower Moon, Scorsese revealed, “I’ve only begun this year to read emails. ‘Cos emails, they scare me. It says ‘CC’ and there are a thousand names. Who are these people? You know what I mean? I’m saying, ‘Wait a minute, is this a personal email? What does that mean?’”

As the tweeter who shared the video said, Scorsese did indeed make several points. Why are you CCing everyone you know when BCC exists? Why am I even included on this email chain to begin with? Could this have been a text?

Since Scorsese is new to email, I just hope someone has taught him all of the necessary etiquette that comes naturally to those of us more familiar with the format — does he know not to reply all to those emails with a thousand people CC’d? Then again, you probably wouldn’t be mad about receiving a reply-all email from Martin Scorsese.

Honestly, a director as prolific as Scorsese shouldn’t have to worry about such minor concerns as email, so it’s no wonder he’s been able to avoid it until now. We need him fully focused on filmmaking; leave the emails to the assistants. If he must enter the 21st century, however, hopefully he does so by continuing to make TikToks with his daughter — I need to know if he knows what “rizz” means, urgently.
