Have you ever wondered if what you see in a family photo shoot is true or just a fiction?

This is a topic that I have long felt the need to talk about even if, after so many years of family photography, I find myself doing it only today.

Perhaps because the issue to be dealt with is not simple, but it is certainly an important question to unravel.

Being able to obtain photographs that tell the emotions of the families who choose us with naturalness, simplicity and serenity, is our main aim.

So the short answer to the question "How much truth is there in one of our family photoshoots?" is: Everything .

However, answering with a single word would be far too simplistic and the answer by no means exhaustive.

So what is it that makes photographs real and full of emotion?

Without a doubt, over the years, I have come to understand that technical perfection is not what is needed. My past as a fashion photographer forced me to always look for perfect light, extreme sharpness, and homogeneous skin tones and without imperfections: I had to learn that all this would not have been useful, or rather; it would not have been necessary or sufficient to obtain real woodland family Photoshoot.

Technical perfection often returns extremely beautiful results, but also aseptic, devoid of any emotion.

Working closely with children and families requires a great deal of empathy, this is because it is the essential skill if you want to tell something true with photographs.

I never thought, not even for a moment, that it was easy to get inside people and understand them enough to portray them spontaneously and naturally; even less if you need to do it in the short time available for a photo shoot.

Precisely for these reasons the secret lies in creating a bond with the family that I will have to photograph, but obviously it is a process that must begin well before the day of the photo shoot.

First of all we try to create a contact already with the online presence, with the website and social channels. The blog is a very useful tool, which allows me to express myself freely and to tell both how we work and what services we offer.

This begins to lay the foundations of the relationship with the families who will choose us, allows them to know our photographic style and to imagine, identifying themselves, what their service will be like.

The second step is the consulting meeting in the studio, a moment of crucial importance, because it allows us and our clients to “smell each other”. On the day of the photo shoot there will not be that slight atmosphere of tension typical of when people do not know who or what to expect: we will have already met , we will have already had a coffee together talking about the shoot.

This way the photo shoot will run smoothly without the need to break the ice.

Emotions and spontaneity, have I already said that?

I always leave a lot of freedom to families while I take their photographs; the moments of interaction between children, mom and dad are unique.

This is essential to tell in images the bonds and feelings that are found within a family.

Perhaps my favourite thing is the fact that since each family is different from the other, there will never be a photo shoot identical to another.

Furthermore, as children are the protagonists, they often know how to give us very funny expressions; it is not difficult to imagine how much a parent is pleased to be able to keep the memory of these “spontaneous performances”.

In fact, I wasn't kidding when I told you it's all true in one of our Woodlands outdoor Photographers.

We set up a set, we take care of the light and we manage the colors, but it is our families who show off real emotions and we are very ready to photograph them.
