I went to a couples weekend retreat one time in an attempt to fix my relationship with my first wife. We had never cheated on each other but as the weekend went on, we discovered that most couples were there because of infidelity. Either the husband - the wife or both. The thing forever burned in my memory was the pain in their eyes as they opened up to the group and told their stories. I marveled at their ability to face such deep hurt and attempt to make peace with it. I didn't see anyone that was completely healed though. They were all broken and would be as long as they were together. They had decided that staying together and fighting those nightmarish memories was worth it. That being together somehow made more sense than the alternative.

The pain in their eyes though...
