George Lucas Perplexed After First Screening of the 'Phantom Menace'

When Geroge Lucas first watched a rough cut for his 1999 film Star Wars: The Phantom Menace he was less than pleased with his work, telling the room of collaborators that he “may have gone too far in a few places.” This was a crucial moment in the history of Star Wars, which eventually lead many lifelong fans to despise Lucas for quote-un-quote "running their childhood."

You can tell Lucas isn't the only one in the room at a loss for words. Critics did not give Lucas' Star Wars prequel trilogy good reviews, but as someone who - hand to god - had a cardboard cutout of Jar-Jar Binks as a kid, I beg to differ. The internet would later restore life to the once scorned trilogy through memes, but this moment reminds us of what Marty McFly once said, "I guess you guys are ready for that yet, but your kids are going to love it.
