NFTs were pretty much a bad idea from the beginning. If you made money flipping NFTs, you’ll get no judgment from me — get your bag, baby — but if you’re still one of those people peddling the idea that NFTs are the way of the future, I demand that you give me a taste of what you’re smoking.

That’s because NFTs are, generally speaking, just publicly-accessible image files hosted on a server somewhere. While they may be “backed up on the blockchain,” paying for these files, it shouldn’t need to be said, is dumb.

It took some people longer to realize this than others. That’s why there’s been a fairly significant sell-off of NFTs in the past few years, including by those holding NFTs from major projects like Bored Ape Yacht Club. Recently, one alleged Bored Ape holder, @vydamo on X/Twitter, claimed to have tearfully sold his prized NFT — and got absolutely obliterated by online commenters.

“It is with a heavy heart I announce the sale of my long term ape, Salazar,” the post begins. “Most of my early followers know me as this ape. My kids know me as this ape. I met my wife when I WAS this ape and had my first kid when I still proudly wore this ape. By extension, it is part of me.”

The reason for vydamo’s sell-off appears to be related to some interminable dispute that BAYC holders have with an exchange called Blur. I’m not going to get into it — I read several articles and came to the conclusion that the whole thing was stupid — but it seems to really bother people like vydamo, who says he’ll only hop back into the BAYC gang if Blur is eliminated and he receives an apology from Yuga Labs, the company behind BAYC.

Oh, and he also wants the team to denounce an X user by the name of @CharlotteFang77. Again, it’s really not worth trying to figure this stuff out.

While vydamo is trying his best to put on a brave face, he’s really letting his pain show. He described someone mocking him as “kicking someone who lost essentially a part of them,” and later recoiled at the idea that the NFT’s new owner was calling the ape Jennifer.

That said, I’m also fairly convinced this is all one big troll. To start, the ape in question has been traded around a lot in the past few days, though I’m admittedly pretty stupid when it comes to NFTs, so this could mean nothing.

What’s really setting off alarm bells is vydamo’s increasingly deranged responses to those making fun of him, including claims that just don’t make sense. He’s also mocked those who shell out for BAYC in the past, making the idea that he would drop a considerable amount of money for the same thing a pretty unbelievable prospect.

Regardless, all of the genuine responses have been pretty funny, and I really just can’t get enough of the memes.

To conclude, spend your money on things that matter. Or don’t. I really don’t care. Just don’t buy JPEGs.
