When you’re growing up in the United States, the media tells you that all British people are prim, proper and dignified. As we’re gorging ourselves on greasy food while watching the Big Game, those Brits are probably over there sipping tea and discussing Shakespeare, all while dressed in exquisite four-layered wool suits.

This illusion is promptly destroyed the second you meet any actual British person. As it turns out, the U.K. is kind of a terrible place to live — its schools are falling apart, the government doesn’t even know how to use a spreadsheet and the average Brit is far more likely to fight you than ask for your opinions on Lord Byron.

Despite this, some Brits still love their terrible country. Others, in contrast, see the truth and consequences of living in the tattered remains of an empire. For example, you can’t even buy cheese anymore without having an attendant unlock it.

In this video, the user claims that shops are locking cheese up in plastic boxes so people don’t steal it. “I’m in a co-op. Blocks of cheese put in a fucking plastic container so people ain’t robbing cheese,” the TikToker explains. “What the fuck has the UK come to? Ooh, that cheese is locked up. You can’t steal it.”

Counterpoint, I could absolutely steal that. Try me. But more importantly, welcome to the club, Brits — come to the U.S. and try shopping at a CVS!

Commenters on Reddit noted that cheese is among the most stolen foods in the world, as it’s relatively expensive while being easy to snatch. Others noted that the U.S. government is currently hoarding around $1.4 billion worth of cheese — so maybe it doesn’t need to be that expensive in the first place, huh?

Regardless of why this is happening, it’s pretty funny, and annoying, that buying a piece of cheese in the U.K. now requires employee assistance — or, if you can’t wait, a hacksaw.
