It's amazing how dependent we as a society are on pictures to dispense critical information. Sure, we grew out of coloring books and progressed to... book books.... but we still depend on derpy little pictures to tell us which bathroom door doesn't have people screaming on the other side and what streets its okay to speed on.

So when a sign fails to do its only job, things start to break down pretty quickly.
